Reporting jointly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) MUSC Charleston Division, the Chief Physician Executive (CPE) for MUSC Physicians, and indirectly to the MUSC System Chief People Officer (SCPO). The new Charleston Division Chief People Officer (CPO) will be responsible for leading the Charleston Division, including our Orangeburg location. The current headcount of the combined groups is 108, including 98 in Charleston and 10 in Orangeburg. The incoming CPO will assess and determine the current and future needs of the HR function and HR Team. This will include working with the overall HR functions of both MUSC and MUSC Health under the leadership of the System CPO and the System Executive Director, HR Transformation and Operations on transforming the traditional HR service delivery model into a contemporary, strategic, high impact HR operating model that emphasizes internal and external customer experiences in support of MUSC’s vision, mission, and values. This position serves as a key member on the Charleston Division’s Executive Leadership Council (ELC), MUSC Physician’s leadership team, and MUSC HR Leadership Team, and will work collaboratively across MUSC to develop and communicate people plans and human capital strategies in support of organizational objectives. This position is responsible for the achievement of organizational goals, implementation of strategic initiatives and effective leadership of day-to-day operations for a capable, engaged, and energetic care team member (CTM) community. The Charleston Division CPO oversees MUSC Health’s human resource team that supports both the Charleston Medical Center, MUSC Physicians and MUSC Orangeburg. Key areas of responsibility include compensation and benefits, change management, performance management, talent management and workforce development, total rewards and recognition, training, employment law, recruiting and organizational effectiveness. This position has a strong emphasis on opportunities to continue to drive positive employee engagement and development of CTMs and internal leaders. The CPO leads critical HR processes throughout the organization to accomplish key business objectives, implement cultural and organizational change, develop a business performance model, and ensure that the business has the human capital, capability, leadership, and bench strength to achieve profit and growth strategies. A minimum of 15 years of progressive leadership experience, with at least 5 years of executive HR experience, including serving as a Chief HR Officer in a physician led healthcare system. Strong proven business acumen to contribute to the operations of multiple hospitals, physician practices, ambulatory services and nursing leadership and team. Working with and contributing to the effectiveness of all members of the leadership team is a key need, along with the ability to synthesize data and information to convert to knowledge and wisdom. Data driven management approach to decision-making and information sharing. Work experience as a working leader who can drive cultural and organizational change, including company-wide or business unit-wide organizational redesign and restructuring. A working knowledge of various organizational structures that best leverage the organizations resources is vital. Previous experience reporting to or directly supporting multiple CEOs in a matrix environment and facilitating the development of a high-performing cross functional executive team. Proven track record of building and mentoring a team to achieve goals and increase key performance indicators. Significant HR experience as a HR executive business partner who has worked alongside business leaders to drive human capital strategies. Serving and collaborating as a great teammate/peer is a significant need of the new CPO. Exemplary leadership experience developing and driving high-performance organizations, evidenced by proactive employee engagement monitoring and improvement, increasing care team member retention in a challenging environment, and developing proactive people development programs. Proven capability to design and implement successful organization and individual assessment and development programs. This will be coupled with the selection, recruitment, and cultivation of senior and operating management talent, including bench strength analysis and succession planning. Healthcare industry experience is required, and head of HR experience at an Academic Medical Center (AMC) is preferred. Bachelor's Degree is required. A master’s degree and HR certifications such as SPHR are strongly preferred. A track record of high performance in a heavily matrixed organization is also preferred.
