KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Naval Reactors Engineer, you will oversee the Navy's fleet of nuclear-powered vessels, as well as shore-based prototypes and nuclear propulsion support facilities. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing reactor and fluid systems
  • Exploring reactor physics
  • Developing materials and components, such as steam generators, pumps, and valves
  • Controlling instrumentation for reactors, steam, and electric plants
  • Conducting rigorous testing and quality control
  • Implementing shielding techniques
  • Managing chemistry and radiological controls

Stationed at Naval Reactors Headquarters in Washington, D.C., you will play a vital role in technical oversight for projects that range from reactor design to fleet operations and the decommissioning of warships.

EDUCATIONAL ADVANCEMENT

Students majoring in mathematics, engineering, physics, and chemistry will receive preferred consideration. If selected for the NUPOC program, you can:

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must be a U.S. citizen between 19 and 29 years old (exceptions may apply up to age 40). You should be pursuing a B.A., B.S., or M.S. in a technical field, such as mathematics, engineering, physics, or chemistry. Additional requirements include:

  • Completion of one academic year of calculus
  • Completion of one year of calculus-based physics
  • A strong GPA, with no lower than a 'B' in all technical courses

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Your training will primarily take place at Naval Reactors Headquarters in Washington, D.C. You will join a select team of roughly 500 professionals who oversee the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program from its inception to its conclusion. Even as a junior engineer, you will assume significant responsibilities in state-of-the-art facilities, including:
