The Campus Police Department at Ferrum College is accepting applications for a Police Officer. This position is responsible for the efficient performance of required duties conforming to the rules, regulations, and general orders contained herein. Duties shall consist of, but are not limited to, general police responsibilities necessary to the safety and good order of the community.
A police officer shall:
Essential Functions:
All officers will be required to work shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as assigned. Shift assignments are subject to rotation based on departmental needs and staffing levels.
Enforce institutional rules, regulations, and laws regarding student conduct as defined in the Student Handbook.
Enforce regulations concerning parking, blocking, or impeding traffic.
Issue traffic tickets, summons, warrants, and arrest warrants.
Enforce institutional rules relative to vehicle identification and parking permits.
Enforce criminal and traffic laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia within the jurisdiction of authority.
Maintain a professional law enforcement image at all times. Provide consistent law enforcement, dealing with each occurrence in the same professional manner.
Pursue additional police training.
File patrol reports after each shift.
To be knowledgeable of all security systems for the Ferrum College campus, including security cameras and alarm systems, as well as the operational procedures of each.
Function as a team member of the Student Affairs Office in the development and implementation of processes necessary to accomplish the goals and philosophy of the Student Affairs Office and the College.
Assume special responsibilities on assignment by the Chief of Police and his/her designee, the VP of Operations, or the President.
Engage the campus community in crime and safety prevention.
Conduct full investigations on cases.
Conducting foot patrols in and around academic buildings to identify and address security and safety issues.
Foot patrols in and around occupied as well as unoccupied dorm buildings to check for security and safety issues.

Certified community police specialist; DCJS certified basic instructor.
