The Vascular Access Specialist: is primarily responsible for the insertion of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICC) in the outpatient as well as the inpatient setting. Uses the nursing process in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care provided to individuals with complex vascular access needs. Actively accepts, understands, and practices appropriate standards of intravenous nursing. Actively supports the mission, vision, and values of the hospital and department. Performs various other activities related to vascular access including but not limited to repair of PICC lines, declotting of all vascular access devices, dressing changes to all vascular access devices, provides education and training to patients and staff on vascular access device care and management.
Current RN license in the state. Documented skill and competency in peripheral IV access and central vascular access devices. Successful completion of the requirements for PICC line insertion as stipulated by the Alabama Board of Nursing. Certification Requirement: Must obtain certification as a Certified Registered Nurse Infusionist (CRNI) within one year of date of employment. Must be able to rotate being on call during evenings, nights, and weekends.
Must be able to read, write, and speak English. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of various education levels via written and verbal formats. Ability to conduct educational activities and presentations effectively to all levels of staff.
Skills: Successful course completion in Basic Cardiac Life Support. Successful course completion of institutional Intermediate EKG Course. Annual completion of competency requirements. Ability to function independently with effective problem-solving, critical thinking, and presentation skills. Successful completion of Advance Cardiac Life Support course (preferred). Experience in operating personal computers, including operation of computer software in a Windows environment (preferred).
