Small Arms Repairer

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. This is a Military Technician position with the 88th Readiness Division, Area Maintenance Support Activity (AMSA) 159 located at Weldon Spring, Missouri. This position requires an active membership as a Soldier in the Army Reserve before a start date can be set.

Opening and closing dates: 07/12/2025 to 07/25/2025

Salary: $32.18 - $37.60 per hour

Duties include:

  • Inspect small arms to determine serviceability and condition of repairs necessary.
  • Disassemble weapons to diagnose malfunctions.
  • Repair small weapons by replacing obsolete parts and/or assemblies.
  • Observe rules and regulations to ensure all safety and physical security standards are followed.
  • Analyze unit deficiencies to determine required organizational training.
  • Suggest corrective actions in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Use hand tools to make repairs and adjustments.
  • Utilize measuring instruments to determine when parts are worn or damaged.
  • List repairs on appropriate forms to indicate needed repairs.
  • Prepare reports on recurring equipment failures.
  • Document inventory to maintain accountability of weapons.
  • Performs two level Preventative Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) to include periodic gauging.
  • Conduct operational checks and final inspections to ensure maintenance has been completed.

  • This position requires active membership as a Soldier in the U.S. Army Reserve (USAR).

  • This position requires a medical examination prior to employment.
  • This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment/Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
  • This position is subject to Drug Abuse Testing Program requirements.

Qualifications:

This position is being filled under the Direct Hire Authority for DoD Maintenance Activities. Who May Apply: US Citizens. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Small Arms Repairer without more than normal supervision. To meet the screen out element, applicants should document experience or show the ability to do the following: initial inspection of small weapons to determine repairs needed; disassemble, repair, and replace components on small arms; final inspection to ensure repairs were completed correctly; use of hand tools, precision gauges and measuring instruments; perform weapon operational tests; provide training; and prepare reports. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort Required: Frequently lifts subassemblies or small weapons weighing 15 to 20 pounds. Often carries large assemblies or weapons weighing up to 50 pounds. Work requires walking, bending, and long periods of standing. Working Conditions: Works in shop buildings that are well lighted, heated, and ventilated. Stands on concrete floors or other hard surfaces for long periods. Exposed to oil, grease, and solvents when cleaning and lubricating weapons. Exposed to the possibility of minor cuts and bruises from tools and sharp edges of metal. Subject to noise when test firing weapons.
